Fort Jesus is a coral-stone giant raised by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 to guard Mombasa's Old Port, so shaped that from above it looks like a man lying beside the sea. Besieged and captured nine times, it stands today — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and museum — as the coast's finest record of four centuries of Swahili, Portuguese, Omani and British history.
